Strand of Games

9th May 2019

As part of the ASF process the strand we decided to prioritise was Games. with emphasis on the fundamental movements. We linked it our GAA 5 star programme under the headings , Have a ball, Fun &Run, Catch & Kick , Go Games and Skill Challenges. We were supported by visiting instructors. Teachers took part in CDP . We decided Games was important for children as it  enhances the development of basic skills, and many opportunities are provided for social interaction.

Children were taught the basic skills appropriate to their stage of development and encouraged to practice these skills at school and at  home  with family example hand pass , kick pass , throwing a ball and catching.

Children were exposed to a variety of games and taught concepts  such  as possession, teamwork, attack, defence and use of space.

‘A balanced programme of games ensures that the child experiences
a wide variety of activities that provide enjoyment and challenge and that
foster a lifelong interest’.  Physical Education Curriculum
